Design experiment Christmas seals, which began in 1979, are issued on a limited basis to help select the design of the following years national issue. The nationally issued Christmas Seals from 1981 to date were selected from a previous design experiment. 1981 National was selected from the 1980-T5 design experiment; 1982 from 81-T4; 1983 from 82-T6; 1984 from 83-T4; 1985 from 84-T5; 1986 from 85-T12; 1987 from 1986-T5; 1988 from 1987-T9; 1989 from 1988-T5; 1990 from 1989-T4; 1991 from 1990-T5; 1992 from 1991-T6; 1993 from 1992-T5; 1994 from 1993-T4a; 1995 from 1994-T5; 1996 from 1995-T9; 1997 from 1996-T7; 1998 from 1997-T1; 1999 from 98-T5; 2000 from 99-T1; 2001 from 2000-T10; 2002 from 2001-T8. The 2002 and 2003 National issues were similar; both were based on a 2001 design experiment (2001-T8). The 2005 National issue was selected from a 2003 design experiment (2003-T6); 2006 from 2005-T1; 2007 from 2006-T1.
Other modern experiments which have become regular issues, including Spanish text beginning in 1982, silver and gold foil beginning in 1985 and Spring issues beginning in 1987.
